Moving to Stillness

Dear (wo)man,

It is autumn and daylight savings are coming to an end soon. After the summer, ‘getting back on your pleat’ as they say in Flanders is always ‘a little thing’ as they say in the Netherlands. Now that you’ve picked up the rhythm of work and private life again, perhaps pushing a bit more energy in – you have overtaken yourself, stumbled and huh, there was your Me: “Hi Me, haven’t seen you in a long time! How’re you?”, then you know again: life is an exercise in balancing, and yoga helps.

Yogaschool Amsterdam was mentioned in HetParool as a ‘sports boutique’, well, nice that we were spotted. We move a lot in Iyengar yoga classes, and yes, there is exchange.
Yoga is about stillness. Doing and repeating first, polishing and making connections later, and after a long time it becomes a kind of ritual, if you will. And whether you’ve just started, or have been practicing for years, the peace and space at the end of the classes become impressive.
“No action without movement” said Geeta Iyengar, “Move! Move!” she would fire at us, and jokingly: “Do, do or die”. I can’t wait to go back to Pune.

Anna and I are leaving for Pune, India on January 1st, where the Iyengar’s’ mother institute, the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute, is celebrating its 50th anniversary. Anna will return in early February, and I will stay until March 1st, a long-cherished wish to go through the cycle that we also maintain in the Kanaalstraat twice: standing postures, forward bends, back bends and Pranayama.
Until 2019 I was there eight times. And then suddenly everything changed with the pandemic and later a relocation of the school.
Such a period in Pune is a time of practicing, reflecting, taking lessons, assisting in the (sample the atmosphere in this short documentary:) ‘Therapy class‘ and observing. Of course, in your free time you will meet yoga friends from all over the world, soak up the city (with smog), take good care of yourself and find contact with and gifts for home. Anna is going to experience it all, wonderful to go together.

What does this mean for you?
No classes on December 25 and 26.
December 27-28-29-30 ‘After Christmas workshop’ (info see below) and a slightly thinner schedule until New Year’s Eve.
School closure from January 1 to 15.
Until March there will be classes in an almost full schedule: Harriët, you might still know from her wonderful classes in the school on the Baarsjesweg or online, FransJozef and later also Anna will take good care of you. And I, once in Pune, will investigate the possibility of teaching the Pranayama classes via Zoom.

Please take this unusual winter break into account when planning your purchase of a new class card. If necessary, buy a different type of card or even Drop in tickets for a while if you anticipate that you will not be able to use your tickets during the term of your class card.
We would appreciate it if you book your lesson or series of lessons (!) at least one day in advance. You can cancel your booking free of charge up to 4 hours before the start of the lesson.

I want to make a case for our three Beginners classes: Tuesday 19:45; Wednesday 18:00 and Saturday 11:00. Even as an old yoga veteran, you can perfectly go there to have your ego petted;-). No seriously, these classes are mainly for beginners, but also a good alternative for when you can’t come to ‘your’ General or Advanced class or if you are struggling with an injury. Sometimes you are unsure whether you can attend a class with an injury. Just come, because there is always a way to get better or at least feel better. So come to class, especially if you have an injury.

Linda will lead one more ‘quiet time’ class on 03/11, Sunday evening. Silence is beautiful at that time of year. Click on the date for more information and booking.

View the schedule from day to day? Then click here for the CLASS SCHEDULE page on our website. There you ‘ll find all the classes together. As soon as you click on a class to book, you will swoosh across the internet to the Momoyoga site where you can create and view your personal account and arrange your classes and many other useful things.

With winter just around the corner, refresh regularly. A healthy body, clear vision, yoga teaches you how to, so see you in the Kanaalstraat or on the screen!
